To participate in the GameDay Recycling Challenge, schools need to track the quantity of recyclables, organic food waste, and trash generated at one or more regular season home football games. Following that game, schools will report quantities of each material type. Schools will only be ranked in the categories for which they have weight data. Schools will be permitted to report numbers for more than one game if they choose, but only the best performing game’s collection data will be used to determine ranking.
Report recycling, composting, reuse, donation, and trash disposal in pounds. The following materials are included in the GameDay Challenge:
• Boxboard / chipboard
• Office paper (all colors)
• Plastic bottles (e.g., soda, water, bottles)
• Plastic cups
• Aluminum cans
• Glass bottles and jars
• Steel cans
• Cardboard boxes
Mixed Recyclable Materials
• Any of the materials listed under paper, bottle and can, and corrugated cardboard recycling collected in a mixed manner such as single-stream organics
Food – Donation
• Surplus edible food donated for human or animal consumption
Organics – Composting
• Pre and post-consumer food waste
• Compostable dinnerware, napkins, etc.
• Fats/Oils/Greases going to biodiesel or other repurposed uses
• Municipal solid waste (MSW) disposed via landfill or incinerator
Actual weights of recyclables should always be used where possible. If actual weights are impossible to obtain, weight estimates derived from volume measurements may be substituted using the following guidelines:
– Volume-to-weight conversions must be done using the approved conversion factors. The factors below are loose/ non-compacted. If you need additional factors, please contact the GameDay Challenge Helpline at email@example.com.
o Programs: 950 lbs/cubic yard
o Newspaper: 400 lbs/cubic yard
o Office Paper: 364 lbs/cubic yard
o Plastic Bottles: 35 lbs/cubic yard
o Plastic Cups: 30 lbs/cubic yard
o Glass Bottles: 1,000 lbs/cubic yard
o Steel Cans: 150 lbs/cubic yard
o Corrugated Cardboard: 177 lbs/cubic yard
o Commingled Beverage Containers (plastic/glass/aluminum): 177 lbs/cubic yard
o Food Service Waste Including Service Ware: 50 lbs/cubic yard
o Food Prep and Scraps: 1,000 lbs/cubic yard
o Food Waste Including Corn on the Cob, Bones, Shellfish): 200 lbs/cubic yard
– Volume estimates must be based on actual observed quantities. For instance, a five yard dumpster of cardboard must be observed to be full, or a visual determination of how full it is must be made. Simply reporting based on capacity of the container without observed quantities is not allowed.
• All schools must to register to participate. The first step is to create an account in Re-TRAC and then complete the GameDay Registration Form. Registration form for the 2018 competition will be available to complete in mid-August.
• To report data from tracked football games, log in to Re-TRAC, click the grey “Go” button next to your school’s name, and click the “Add New” button to start filling out a Results Form.
Results and Standings
National Challenge > Schools that can measure waste and recycling in BOTH their stadium and tailgate/parking areas are eligible for the National Challenge:
Schools will be ranked based on their overall diversion rate which combines trash, recycling and composting data using the following formula:
Schools will be ranked based on the total weight of recycling, organics composted and food donated using the following formula:
The school with the highest weight wins.
Schools compete within their own athletic conference. Schools that are not a part of a conference (“independent”) will be listed separately.
Schools should strive to measure waste and recycling inside and outside their stadium but may submit data from just inside the stadium, just outside the stadium or both inside and outside the stadium.
Since most conference awards are based on attendance (per capita) schools competing for a conference award must report official stadium attendance as listed on the box score from the game. If there is not an official box score schools can report estimate attendance.
Schools will be ranked based on the per capita weight of recyclables using the following formula:
The school with the highest recycling rate wins.
Schools will be ranked based on the per capita weight of total waste generated, including trash sent to the landfill or an incinerator, recyclables and food organics using the following formula:
The school with the lowest per capita waste generation wins.
Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Schools will be ranked on the per capita greenhouse gas reductions associated with their waste reduction achievements. These reductions will be calculated using EPA’s WARM factors programmed in the Re-TRAC system. The per capita reduction will be calculated using the following formula:
The school with the highest greenhouse gas reduction wins.
Schools will be ranked based on the per capita weight of organic waste reduced using the following formula:
The school with the highest organic reduction rate wins.
Conference Diversion Rate
Schools will be ranked within their conference or division based on their overall recycling rate which combines trash, recycling, and composting data using the following formula:
The school with the highest diversion rate wins.
GameDay Recycling Challenge Donation Recognition
Schools that donate left over food from game operations or that host special fan drop-off or collection events as part of their GameDay efforts can submit data for donation recognition.
Fan collection events could include accepting items such as used athletic shoes, electronics, canned food or clothing for either reuse or recycling.
To be recognized schools will need to provide the date of the event, the type of material collected, the organization(s) that the material was donated to, the actual or estimated weight of the material and the actual or estimated number of people who participated.
